The Rock Band drums are pretty loud. So loud, in fact, that we often had to turn the TV up just to hear the music when someone was drumming. Plus, you can’t play drums while other people are asleep. After finding some things on the internet where people put mouse pads on their drums, we decided to take the plunge.

First, we went to IKEA and bought 4 circular mouse pads for $0.99 each. Then, i measured out the diameter of the drum pads (minus the color-ring), used a compass to mark the mouse pads, and used scissors to cut them. As you can see in the closeup image below, the scissors don’t create a completely smooth edge, but we’re going for more function over form here. After cutting the mouse pads, i used double-sided tape to attach them to the drum pads. After testing, we found that the pads are just as sensitive as before, have a better bounce, and are much quieter. I’d say it’s a win-win.

Also, our original bass pedal broke, so we decided to buy a wooden replacement. I can’t seem to find the site again, but there are lots of them on the market now. Overall, we’re very happy with it.
