The Eggnogathon was a massive taste-test of 14 varieties of eggnog. We tasted them one at a time, and recorded what we though of each one based on an arbitrary ranking of 1 through 10. The tasters were Kelly, Jacob, Nick, and Keegan (me). Zach recorded the results, and tried the winning variety to see what he thought (he did not like eggnog). At the time of the test, Kelly already loved eggnog, Jacob not as much, and Nick and myself were unsure.

We didn’t add alcohol to any of our nogs. The addition of alcohol would probably have completely changed the results. Who knows?

We recorded the Eggnogathon using a cassette and cassette recorder (because we so old school). The audio from this cassette was then ripped and uploaded for your listening pleasure. Download the 21 MB mp3 file.

As you can see, Southern Comfort is king among eggnogs. I think what we all agreed is that while it might not be the most traditional eggnog, it is the best tasting and has the most appealing mouth feel of the ones we tried. Silk Nog tasted like watered down turpentine, and probably should be avoided if possible. I really wanted to like the Silk, too, because that’s all I had when I was vegan… and I wanted to think that I had been drinking something good. I think we were all really surprised that Lactaid was so good. We all agreed that it was much less viscous than the other nogs, making it more drinkable.

Personally, I really like the Hood Pumpkin variety, but I can’t imagine myself drinking more than a mug’s worth (it’s just so rich). I also found that a lot of the “bad” nogs had a strong taste of bubble gum. And, just to be clear, having a bubble gum flavor is bad in my book.

In conclusion, I hope this little thing we did can be useful to you in your future eggnog purchasing ventures. If you ever find an eggnog you think is better than one of these, let us know. We would love to revisit the Eggnogathon if enough new varieties are available to try. Also we would like to do other “-athon”-type taste-tests in the future, so keep at least one eye always open to this page!
