We had our first Skype call Saturday, and it was pretty amazing! Mike called in all the way from Moldova, and we were able to talk to him pretty much instantaneously. It was very awesome and we hope to get calls from Mike more often. (Also, Elizabeth should be able to skype in as well in soon-to-come episodes…)
Unfortunately, my laptop only has 750 megahertz of processing power, which turns out to not be enough for Skype, recording AND broadcasting to shoutcast all at the same time. The recording has skips in it, and it really makes me sad because I was really exited about putting the episode up. Basically there are very small gaps in the recording that cut out about half a second every so often. It may make understanding the flow of conversations difficult. Hopefully it won’t be too horrible for you. Sorry! (We have learned our lesson!)
Next week we will be skyping on a different machine, so this won’t happen again. We should have tested long skype calls before doing a long skype call… :( HOWEVER! We have learned that more than one computer is the way to go, and now Jacob’s laptop will provide the power for skype and other computers will join in the mighty quest to help.
We are also hoping to start simulcasting in a lower bitrate shoutcast for slower internet connections. Stay tuned for more news on that front!
